Nauvoo
Week of July 14 - 20
We finally asked President Beecher if we could leave the mission and go to Nauvoo. This was our week to go. We left Friday morning and drove to Hannibal. Hannibal is where Mark Twain is from. His childhood house is still there and the fence that Tom Sawyer had his friends paint for him. Lots of stories there. We had a fun time looking around before continuing on to Nauvoo.
We got to Nauvoo and went to the Visitors Center to find out all the things to see and do. Way more than we had time for but we looked around at the sights there at the Visitor Center, then we went outside and saw the Garden of Statues. It was as beautiful as I remembered it. We checked in to the Nauvoo Hotel. A cute little old house turned into a hotel. We got an upgrade to a two bedroom suite. Don't let me fool you, it was very tiny but full of character. We had an appointment to do an Endowment at the Nauvoo temple that afternoon. What a blessing to be able to go and see it. They have restored it as much as the original temple as they could. So beautiful! That night we went to the Town Fair and watched the performers dance and children playing games. We went over to the Family History Booth and I found out that 264 of my ancestors were in Nauvoo at some point. Then we headed over to the British Pageant. It was a play about the Saints over in England and learning about the gospel and coming over to America on a boat. Lots of singing and dancing. We loved it.
We woke the next morning to rain. Felt a little discouraged but headed out anyway to see what we could see. We took a tour through the Mansion Home and the Homestead House. Both were beautiful and full of stories. Wen then took another tour through the Red Brick Store. Afterwards we went on a covered wagon ride. It was raining pretty hard but it was covered and they gave us blankets to put around us. It was fun. We had an early dinner with the VanAmburg's from our ward in Arizona. It was fun to see their apartment and learn about their mission. So different than ours. After dinner we went over and watched the Pageant about Nauvoo. Again, lots of singing and dancing.
Sunday morning we met the VanAmburgs and went to their church with them. They belong to an all Senior Service Missionary Ward, which was amazing.
After church and our good byes we started home. We had a little time going home so we decided to stop at Carthage Jail and go through that visitors center and tour. It was a lot different than I remembered from 25 years ago. We got home late and we were exhausted but what a great weekend!
